Stakeholder Engagement

Building bridges between technology, industry, regulation, and society to accelerate the transition to human-based disease modelling

Who and How

Management & Governance: The engagement strategy is managed by POLIMI-META (the Social Sciences and Humanities subunit) in close collaboration with the Dissemination & Communication Working Group (D&C-WG). This ensures that stakeholder input is systematically collected, analyzed, and integrated into the project's technical and strategic decisions.

🔄 The Feedback Loop: Feedback collected from surveys and workshops is directly integrated into the project's technical development and the Exploitation Plan. This ensures that the PHOENIX platforms (µHeart, µNMC, and µSafeHeart) meet real-world industrial and regulatory requirements.

Research Surveys

Targeted engagement activities to capture stakeholder needs and perspectives across academia, industry, and society

Survey 1: Research, Methodological & Economic Implications

Ongoing / Coming Soon

Focus: Internal analysis of the development of PHOENIX human-based in vitro models to understand their research, methodological, epistemic, economic and clinical implications. This study combines systematic literature review with qualitative and quantitative data collected within the Consortium, including estimated costs and envisioned clinical relevance, to identify key enablers and obstacles in the transition away from animal-based research.

Timing: Month 18
M18

Survey 2: Stakeholder Perspectives & Industrial Readiness

Coming Soon

Focus: Engagement with European and national research and industrial stakeholders to assess broader perceptions of the potential benefits (e.g. cost-effectiveness, translational value) and harms (e.g. acceptance, reliability) of PHOENIX models. This study integrates qualitative research and targeted surveys with Pharma, Biotech and scientific organizations to evaluate alignment with industrial workflows and inform strategies for wider adoption and communication.

Timing: Month 36
M36

Survey 3: Societal, Clinical & Policy Engagement

Coming Soon

Focus: Assessment of implications at societal, clinical and regulatory levels through engagement with end-beneficiaries, lay experts and policy makers. Building on previous findings, this study gathers feedback from clinicians and patient organizations, supports dialogue with regulators, and contributes to a policy-oriented white paper highlighting the scientific, economic and societal value of human-based platforms compared to continued reliance on animal models.

Timing: Month 48
M48

Workshops & Position Statements

Interactive events and policy outputs to align technical development with stakeholder needs

📋

PHOENIX Internal & Stakeholder Workshop

Month 36

A dedicated workshop bringing together consortium members and selected representatives from academia and industry to discuss emerging evidence on the scientific, economic and societal implications of PHOENIX human-based models. The workshop supports internal alignment, validates results from stakeholder engagement activities, and co-develops strategies for the final phase of societal and policy engagement.

👥

PHOENIX Public & End-Beneficiary Workshop

Month 48

A public workshop organized in the context of the final PHOENIX conference, involving clinicians, patient organizations, lay experts and other end-beneficiaries. The event supports discussion of survey findings on benefits, concerns and expectations related to human-based non-animal approaches, and provides a platform to openly address societal and clinical perspectives.

📄

Policy & Societal Position Statement

Month 48

A policy-oriented communication output fostering societal acceptance of non-animal, human-based approaches. Based on evidence collected across the project, including surveys with lay experts and dialogue with policy makers and regulators, the document identifies shared key messages on scientific credibility, economic impact and societal value, supporting informed decision-making at European and national level.

PHOENIX-SE Integration (Hop-On Expansion)

Targeted Outreach: Specific engagement activities are dedicated to the Southeast Europe (SEE) region through TECNALIA SERBIA (TECSR) to foster the adoption of low-cost, scalable safety evaluation tools (µSafeHeart).

This includes regional workshops, training sessions, and capacity-building initiatives to ensure that the PHOENIX-SE expansion reaches underserved research communities and promotes widening participation in cutting-edge biomedical research.
